Comparison methodology

Clear comparisons.
Visible methodology.

How we research financial products, separate facts from opinion and keep Hugo’s comparisons useful.

Primary sources first No paid rankings Corrections welcome

We start with the job, not the feature count

A budgeting app, net worth tracker and financial-planning tool can all be excellent products while answering different questions. We first define the primary job each product is designed to perform. Then we compare where the products overlap and where their underlying approach is genuinely different.

Official information comes first

Pricing, plan limits, supported platforms, security statements and product capabilities are checked against the company’s official website, help centre, documentation and published policies. Every product comparison includes the sources checked and the date of the review.

Community feedback adds context, not proof

Reddit and other public discussions can reveal recurring friction that official feature pages do not show. These reports are anecdotal. We use them to identify questions worth investigating, never as proof that every customer has the same experience.

Our comparison criteria

  • Core purpose: the financial question the product is built to answer.
  • Financial coverage: which accounts, assets, liabilities and currencies can form part of the picture.
  • Data model: manual input, account connections, transaction imports and the habits each approach encourages.
  • Interpretation: whether the product records numbers, explains them or supports scenario planning.
  • Privacy and control: what data the product needs and how much the user chooses to provide.
  • Price and audience: published pricing, plan limits and who receives the strongest value.

Hugo is an interested party

These pages are published by Hugo, so they are not independent editorial reviews. We make that conflict visible, link to primary sources and explicitly say when another product is a better fit. Hugo does not accept affiliate payments for rankings or placement in these comparisons.

Corrections and updates

Products change. We review comparisons when material pricing or product information changes and show the latest fact-check date on each page. If you find an error, email support@meethugo.co with the page and supporting source.
